Have you ever stopped to wonder how the produce you buy at the store actually got there? Turns out, there’s a lot more going on than simply “dropping it off” at the store. There are many different players working nonstop behind the scenes to ensure the goods we consume make it to where they need to go. Each person involved has an important role to play in keeping freight shipments running smoothly throughout the year. One of those key players is the “Freight Broker.”
We interviewed one of Atran Freight’s Freight Brokers, Becky, to get her perspective on what life is like as a Broker. Much like dispatchers and drivers, freight brokers play a vital role in making sure freight arrives at its final destination in a timely manner.
Let’s dive into what life is like for an Broker here at Atran Freight:
What is a typical day like for a Freight Broker?
Usually a typical day is a steady flow of many things. Multitasking best describes my day!
What factors come into play when deciding to take a load for a driver?
We need to make sure the carrier has all the required paperwork on file and that they meet the needs of our shipments.
What is the biggest challenge in your job?
The biggest challenge lately has been negotiating rates.
What technology do you use?
We use the computer and truck posting sites.
How do you communicate with drivers?
We communicate with carriers by phone and email; both ways seem to work.
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
The most rewarding part of my job is the completion of a shipment — when everything from start to finish is a success!
How long have you been in the trucking industry?
I've been in the industry since December of 1998.
What are the biggest changes you’ve seen in the industry during that time?
The biggest changes thus far are the pricing wars, new truck laws, and shortage of trucks.
Thanks to our time with Becky, we have a better understanding of what life is like as a Broker. And wow, it’s a busy one! Juggling phone calls, negotiating rates, trying to find an available truck… and just one phone call or email can throw a wrench in the entire day! Atran’s Freight Brokers work tirelessly to keep everything running smoothly, and we can’t thank them enough!
Thank you, Becky, for all of your hard work and for taking the time to talk with us today!
