Mother's Day Flowers

Mother’s Day is fast-approaching which means florists and shippers are kicking into overdrive. Did you know flowers account for 70% of gifts bought each year on Mother’s Day? Transporting such delicate gifts requires a precise system. Flowers must be kept cool at all times. Once they are placed in a refrigerated truck for transport, they are taken to a cool warehouse where they undergo “pre-cooling.” This vacuums out any warm air that’s still in the shipping container, allowing the flowers to cool faster. The flowers then go through the central hub of America’s flower distribution, Miami International Airport (MIA).

At MIA, the flowers are all inspected by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) to ensure they don’t have any harmful pests or diseases. If they are deemed healthy and pest-free, the flowers are taken for another pre-cooling and release to a warehouse. It’s at this stage that the flowers are broken down into various shipments and domestically transported on refrigerated trucks.

The last step in these flowers’ journey before reaching your mom is their arrival at a retailer.
